No matter how hard you try, it seems inevitable that all your efforts to educate yourself on materials and design choices are going to leave you falling short. Case in point: today, most people have become conscious of VOC’s in their paint to the point that all of the major paint manufacturers are tripping over themselves to out-do, or at least “out claim” the VOC liberation of their paints. What most people don’t realize, and what I didn’t realize until recently, is that the regulated VOC pollutants are only the pollutants that contribute to outdoor air quality – smog – not pollutants affecting indoor air quality. That’s right, many, if not most of your no VOC paints contain unregulated toxins that are harmful to indoor air quality, such pollutants as ammonia, acetone, formaldehyde, and crystalline silica.
Even for a person who has opened a business (me) dedicated to making the greenest product choices so that it is easy for customers to make their green choice, the diaspora of ambiguous and sometimes downright misleading information is insurmountable. At Greenovations we have a paint that is healthier, more truly non-toxic than every other synthetically made paint out there, but get this, it’s not VOC free. Regulators require this product to be labeled as low-VOC because it contains an aliphatic ingredient that contributes infinitesimally to smog. But so do wood burning stoves. The paint I am talking about is AFM Safecoat Naturals.
AFM Safecoat Naturals (www.afmsafecoat.com) is a water soluble, bio-degradable, organics oil paint made from plant oils. While other so called no VOC paints still contain known toxins, AFM Naturals low VOC paint is the healthiest, non aggregate surface coating available on the market today. That’s a difficult one for most people to wrap their heads around considering all the buzz about no VOC paints that’s been going on the last few years, but it is a worthwhile piece of information to tangle with. When I paint my children’s home, I want more than the assurances of labels and certifications. I want the healthiest product available and I want to know what makes it so. Fortunately for all of us, the one-upmanship in the paint industry is pushing the true “green” paint manufacturers to surpass all the best hopes of healthy home fans. AFM Naturals is one of a kind.
Next submission I will discuss another, true no-VOC, non toxic surface coating: American Clay.
